Patient Testimony – CyberKnife
Mr Ong Ah Bee
For years, Mr Ong Ah Bee had been coughing non-stop to a point he felt breathless. That prompted him to see doctor.
In October 2018, he was diagnosed with Stage I Lung Cancer. Having been a heavy smoker, Mr Ong’s lungs were considered rather weak. He was told that it was too high a risk for him to do a surgery. The doctor was afraid that the operation would take a toll on his lungs’ function and that would be irreversible in a long run.
Upon learning that, he was not keen to continue to seek for treatment.
To him, it was too much of an hassle to look into other options as the tumour did not not give him any other serious problems except for the initial incident that alarmed him. Furthermore, he had no insurance. However, his son was adamant that it was a time bomb and treatment was compulsory. He was eventually referred to Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital by Penang General Hospital.
CyberKnife came in timely for Mr Ong. It is as effective as surgery for patients who are not good candidates for an operation. Despite the connotation of the name, CyberKnife treatment does not involve surgery. It is a completely non-invasive procedure. It delivers high doses of precisely targeted radiation to destroy tumors or lesions within the body.
On 27 April 2019, Mr Ong had three (3) Fractions in the course of three (3) days of Radiation using the CyberKnife for his tumour in his left lung.
Mr Ong’s thoughts after the treatment (5 months later) :
“I had no side effects and I’m in good health after the treatment. My MRI results before and after showed that the size of my tumour has reduced significantly,” said Mr Ong. Now, he is doing his follow-up in GH.
