Patient Testimony – CyberKnife

Madam Rusdiana Lauw

It all started with a constant ringing (Tinnitus) in Madam Rusdiana’s left ear. Little did she know that that was a symptom of an underlying condition of something more alarming.

Before she came to Mount Miriam, she sought treatment from many physicians and other health care practitioners back in her hometown Indonesia but nothing really helped. Her symptom persisted, the intermittent ringing got more frequent and she eventually lost her hearing in her left ear. After a few rounds of disappointments, her family decided to fly her to Penang to get treatment.

When she came to us, she could not hear anything at all in her left ear. She was diagnosed with Acoustic Neuroma. It is a benign tumour affecting the nerves which runs from the inner ear to the brain. Unilateral sensorineural hearing loss is one of the most common presenting symptoms of Acoustic Neuroma.

A benign tumour is usually slow-growing and rarely spreads. Although these tumors are benign, they can cause serious complications and even death if they grow and exert pressure on nerves and eventually on the brain.

On 13 February 2019, Madam Rusdiana had 1 fraction of stereotactic radiosurgery using CyberKnife. She tolerated her treatment well without any side effects and was able to fly home the next day. Her hearing has since improved and the last MRI showed stable disease.

Why CyberKnife:

Cyberknife Radiosurgery is an excellent alternative therapeutic approach for patients with acoustic neuroma. This is useful for patients who are deemed unfit for surgery or who refuse surgery for certain reasons.

The CyberKnife System does not require patients to be fitted with a rigid and invasive head frame. In the setup stage, the radiation therapist will create a soft mesh mask that is custom-fitted to the patient’s face. This comfortable and non-invasive mask helps the patient keep his or her head and neck still during treatment.

There’s no cutting, incision, blood, anesthesia, or pain. Few, if any, side effects occur, and recovery time is almost not necessary. You can resume your normal activities immediately following treatment.
